Diabetes Educator Wins Award for Life-Changing Care

Unique patient-nominated award program recognizes outstanding work of DEs

PHLADELPHIA, PA, August 9, 2013 – Diabetes Health Monitor magazine announced the winner of the 2013 LifeChanger Award for Diabetes Educators during the 2013 Annual Meeting & Exhibition held by the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE).  This patient-nominated award, presented by Health Monitor Network, recognizes exemplary service to patient and community care by remarkable Diabetes Educators.

The LifeChanger Award winner is selected from semifinalists, who are profiled throughout the year in Diabetes Health Monitor magazine based on compelling patient nominations from across the country. Diabetes Health Monitor magazine, the leading in-office patient-education magazine, has an audience of over 3 million.

Maureen Williams, RN, CDE, was excited to have been selected as the 2013 LifeChanger Award winner. Maureen, a Diabetes Educator at the Bayonne Medical Center in Bayonne, NJ, was nominated by one of her patients, because the patient believes that Maureen continuously demonstrates “above and beyond” attitude toward patient care.

“I nominated Maureen for the LifeChanger award because she definitely changed my life for the better. She showed me that I can live with diabetes and live a long life,” says Rita V., the patient. “She will teach you everything you need about diabetes and you can call her at any time. She’s helped so many people leave her office much better than they came in.”

Maureen works in the CarePoint system at Bayonne Medical Center and has been a DE for 35 years after graduating from St. Francis Medical Center School of Nursing and receiving certifications as a diabetes educator and trainer. Maureen provides diabetes education to both inpatients and outpatients, and also leads a diabetes support group. She is a frequent lecturer and has been recognized as the Diabetes Educator of the Year by peers in the Garden State Diabetes Educators Association in 1997 and 2003. This award exemplifies the high level of patient engagement that Diabetes Educators have in the care of their patients.”
